Man found guilty in 2023 fatal shooting near American Legion Mall

An Indianapolis man, Howard Taylor Moffitt, has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for the fatal shooting of Anthony Drummer last summer near the American Legion Mall. Moffitt, convicted of murder in June, was also deemed a habitual offender, adding eight years to his sentence. The incident occurred in downtown Indianapolis, where Moffitt admitted to shooting Drummer in the head. The murder weapon was found in Moffitt’s backpack, confirmed by forensic testing. The motive behind the shooting has not been publicly disclosed by authorities.

Despite the dismissal of an initial charge of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violence felon, Moffitt plans to appeal the sentence. Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears expressed satisfaction with the conviction and enhanced sentence, emphasizing the commitment to justice for the victim and intolerance towards such violence in the community.

The sentencing by Judge Mark D. Stoner in Marion Superior Court 32 highlights the severity of the crime. The case serves as a reminder of the consequences of violent actions and the importance of upholding justice for victims. The Indianapolis community can find solace in the legal system’s response to such criminal behavior and the efforts to ensure safety and accountability.
