Indianapolis awarded $800,000 grant for LGBTQ+ mental health services – Latest Updates on Indianapolis News, Indiana Weather, and Traffic

The Damien Center in Indianapolis has secured an $800,000 grant to provide mental health services and substance abuse treatment specifically for the LGBTQ+ community. With funding from the state’s Division of Mental Health and Addiction, the organization plans to hire two full-time licensed therapists to offer services at their headquarters and through telehealth. LGBTQ+ individuals in Indiana face higher rates of depression and substance abuse due to discrimination and new laws limiting their rights. The grant will also support therapy programs tailored to LGBTQ+ individuals over 55 and those who are transgender. The Damien Center’s 2020 survey found that many individuals in Central Indiana struggled to find LGBTQ+ friendly providers. President Alan Witchey expressed that this grant will help expand inclusive and affirming care to those who may otherwise have difficulty finding support. To schedule an appointment for these services, individuals can call 317-632-0123.
