Small plane crashes near airport in Washington DC


An American Airlines flight collided with a helicopter as it approached Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington DC, causing the plane to come down in the Potomac River. The Federal Aviation Administration reported that the Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet collided with the helicopter while approaching the runway at around 9:00 pm on Wednesday. The flight, American Airlines Flight 5342, was traveling from Wichita, Kansas. Emergency personnel have been deployed to the area, and takeoffs and landings at the airport have been halted. The FAA is conducting an investigation into the incident. The Metropolitan Police Department is leading a search and rescue operation in the Potomac River with assistance from other agencies.
