A commercial plane and a military helicopter collided midair near Reagan Washington National Airport. Both the American Eagle jet and Army Black Hawk ended up in the Potomac River. American Eagle Flight 5342 was heading to Reagan National Airport in Arlington, Virginia. American Airlines is in contact with authorities and assisting in response efforts.
The Army confirmed that the Black Hawk helicopter was on a training flight from Fort Belvoir, Virginia, with three people on board. Search-and-rescue teams are in the Potomac River and have reportedly recovered bodies from the crash. There is no confirmed information on casualties at this time. The FBI is also involved in the search for survivors. Firefighters are conducting dive operations to assist in the recovery efforts. The Washington Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department and the Metropolitan Police Department are coordinating the operation.
