Ralph Moses, a resident of Calhoun County in Illinois, is leading a movement to separate from Chicago and form a new state that better represents the interests of rural Illinois residents. Frustrated with the control liberal Democrats from Chicago have over the state’s policies, Moses gained support for a resolution on the ballot, which received overwhelming approval in his county.
Indiana Rep. Todd Huston has proposed another idea – redrawing the state boundaries to include disillusioned Illinois residents in Indiana. Despite the challenges of getting approval from the U.S. Congress and statehouse, the movement for separation has gained traction, with 33 counties expressing interest in becoming the nation’s 51st state.
While the likelihood of these measures coming to fruition is low, supporters like G.H. Merritt and Loret Newlin believe that forming a new state is the only way to break away from what they see as corrupt Chicago politics. Their efforts have been validated by Huston’s offer and the attention it has brought to their cause. Despite differing opinions on the best path forward, residents are united in their desire for change in Illinois.
