Kyrsten Sinema’s campaign finance report reveals expenses at a Saudi hotel and on Taylor Swift merchandise

In the final months before retiring, former Senator Kyrsten Sinema’s campaign organization spent almost $700,000, with a portion of that money going towards luxury lodging and travel expenses, including stays at hotels in Saudi Arabia, New York City, Wyoming, Utah, San Francisco, and Las Vegas. There were also significant expenditures on security services, totaling about $140,000. Sinema’s campaign funds were also used for legal services and ending her time in Washington, such as closing down offices and refunding contributions. Despite only raising $2.52 in the final three months of 2024, Sinema spent a large amount on fundraising and event consulting services, as well as on meals and event gifts. The Federal Election Commission allows campaign funds to be used for expenses related to duties as a federal officeholder or winding down a committee upon leaving office, but not for personal use. Sinema’s campaign raised eyebrows for its spending patterns, including on foreign travel, which is relatively rare for federal campaign finance filings. As Sinema’s campaign raised questions for its spending habits, efforts to reach the campaign for comment were unsuccessful, as her personal website has been taken offline. Overall, the campaign ended the year with almost $4.3 million remaining in its bank account.
