Retired Southport Police Department chaplain arrested for molesting an 8-year-old girl
Sylvester “Leroy” Driscoll, a retired Southport Police Department chaplain, has been arrested for the molestation of an 8-year-old girl. The girl reported that the abuse, including rape, happened over 100 times in the past one to two years. Driscoll, 73, was also a civilian employee with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department for over 20 years before leaving in 2019. Despite having no prior criminal history, he is currently being held in the Marion County jail without bond.
The child described the abuse as “gross” and mentioned being forced to watch pornographic material at the age of 5. The abuse was reported to the Indiana Department of Child Services when the child began exhibiting concerning behaviors such as soiling herself, walking bowlegged, and complaining of stomach pain. The victim also mentioned threats of getting rid of her toys if she told anyone and hinted at the possibility of another girl being involved.
Neighbors of Driscoll expressed shock at the allegations, especially considering the number of children in the neighborhood who often play outside. Patricia Allen, a neighbor with grandchildren, expressed her disbelief at the idea of someone harming children. Help is available for victims of domestic violence through resources provided by the Domestic Violence Network website.
Driscoll is scheduled for a court hearing on Monday to address the charges brought against him for the repeated sexual abuse of a minor.
