Tens of thousands of people fled southern Lebanon as Israel intensified its aerial assault, resulting in the deadliest day for the country since the 2006 war with Hezbollah. Nearly 500 people were killed on Monday, with the death toll rising to at least 558 by Tuesday. Israel expanded its attacks in response to mounting tensions with Hezbollah, prompting widespread evacuations in southern and eastern Lebanon. Scenes of families fleeing and fiery explosions fueled fears of a regional conflict.
European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell warned of an “extremely dangerous and worrying” situation, calling it almost a full-fledged war. Israel continued its bombardment, striking dozens of Hezbollah targets as part of “Operation Northern Arrows.” Hezbollah, in turn, launched rockets into northern Israel, vowing to continue until Israel’s offensive in Gaza ends. Israel stated that it would only end its campaign once its goals of enabling safe return for Israelis, pushing Hezbollah forces back, and destroying infrastructure were met. The current campaign would not cease with a halt in fire from Hezbollah alone.
The escalating violence has led to a significant loss of life, with many civilians, including children and women, among the casualties. The ongoing conflict has raised concerns globally, with fears of a full-blown war in the region. Israel’s airstrikes have caused widespread destruction and displacement, with the situation remaining volatile and unpredictable.
