Indiana Coach Curt Cignetti Signs New Contract Amid Historic Season
BLOOMINGTON — Indiana University Head Coach Curt Cignetti is generating excitement in college football following a remarkable 10-0 start and a No. 5 ranking in the 2024 College Football Playoff. In a strategic move just a week before a pivotal matchup against No. 2 Ohio State, Indiana announced a contract extension for Cignetti, which includes a salary increase and extended term to 2029.
Cignetti’s original contract, initiated when he was hired in December 2023 at $4.5 million per year, will now see his compensation rise to $8 million annually, reflecting additional bonuses and support for the program’s infrastructure, including staffing and assistant coach salaries. This new deal brings his total guaranteed compensation to approximately $72 million, making him the highest-paid employee at Indiana University.
"The university has made a very significant financial commitment to football," Cignetti stated at a press conference. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead and develop the program further, acknowledging the promising future ahead.
As Indiana prepares for its showdown with Ohio State, Cignetti will be up against Buckeyes Coach Ryan Day, one of the top-five highest-paid coaches in the nation, earning over $10 million per year. The impressive trajectory of Cignetti’s career from James Madison, where he earned $620,000 annually, to his current position underscores his rapid ascent in college football coaching.
With the Hoosiers poised for potential Big Ten titles and playoff berths, Cignetti’s lucrative contract signals Indiana’s commitment to maintaining a competitive program. Should he continue his winning ways, further salary increases in the future seem likely.
