The state of Indiana is seeking to move forward with the execution of Joseph Corcoran, who is set to die by lethal injection on December 18. Corcoran, convicted of four counts of murder in a 1997 shooting, has expressed his desire to stop all appeals and accept his fate. Despite his attorney’s efforts to request a stay of execution, the Attorney General’s Office argues that there is no reasonable likelihood of success on the merits justifying a delay. The Indiana Supreme Court has already rejected a similar request for a stay of execution. Corcoran has submitted a notarized affidavit stating his guilt and acceptance of the appellate court’s findings. He urges the court not to accept his counsel’s motion to continue litigation. If the execution proceeds, Corcoran will be the first person to be executed in Indiana in 15 years. It remains to be seen whether the court will grant the state’s request and allow the execution to move forward as scheduled.
